Egypt in the horn of Africa: Restoring strategic balance in a turbulent region
Egypt is ramping up its military and diplomatic presence in the Horn of Africa to counter regional instability and protect its strategic interests in the Red Sea and Nile Basin.
Egypt is significantly increasing its diplomatic and military footprint across the Horn of Africa, signaling a shift toward a more assertive role in regional security. According to a report by Bing News – Horn of Africa, Cairo’s recent maneuvers are driven by a need to protect its core national interests, specifically regarding the security of the Red Sea and the stability of the Nile River Basin. This strategic pivot comes at a time of heightened tension, characterized by the ongoing civil war in Sudan and emerging security threats involving coordination between militant groups like Al-Shabaab and the Houthi movement.
A cornerstone of this renewed engagement is Egypt's commitment to join the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). This marks the first time in three decades that Egyptian military and police forces will participate in a peacekeeping operation in Somalia. Beyond military cooperation, Cairo is strengthening ties with Djibouti, Eritrea, and Kenya through investments in infrastructure, energy, and education. Egyptian officials view these partnerships as essential for stabilizing a region currently grappling with internal conflicts and external pressures.
Cairo has also voiced strong opposition to recent attempts by landlocked Ethiopia to establish a permanent naval presence on the Red Sea coast. Egyptian leadership characterizes such moves as threats to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of coastal states. By positioning itself as a key partner for state-building and security, Egypt aims to counter what it perceives as "hegemonic tendencies" and restore a strategic balance in one of the world's most volatile corridors. President Abdel Fatah El-Sisi has indicated that Egypt will utilize its full diplomatic weight to ensure the region remains stable and secure.
